A GREAT NATION DESERVES GREAT ART

Welcome to the world of William Shakespeare.

The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to present Shakespeare in American Communities, the largest tour of Shakespeare in our nation's history. The National Endowment for the Arts has created this program in partnership with Arts Midwest to help revive the American tradition of theatrical touring and to bring the finest art to the broadest possible public.

Since September 2003, the initiative has engaged 66 professional theater companies to bring new Shakespeare productions to more than 1,700 communities as well as military bases across all 50 states. The program will reach thousands of schools with performances and related educational activities.

This ambitious tour exemplifies the Arts Endowment's commitment to artistic excellence, access to all Americans, and arts education.

The National Endowment for the Arts is offering, at no cost, an educational package for high school teachers and students. We believe that these print, audio, and video resources will greatly enrich the education of your students and provide them with ample opportunities to expand their knowledge, creativity, and command of language. The package includes:

  • Teacher's Guide to Shakespeare's life and times and his role in American culture, with lesson plans;

  • Recitation Contest Booklet with performance evaluation forms and play and sonnet selections;

  • Teaching Shakespeare audio CD with readings by James Earl Jones and other actors, as well as historical information from leading scholars;

  • Shakespeare in Our Time video with a focus on introducing students to Shakespeare's life and times and his continuing relevance today;

  • Fun with Shakespeare brochure with crossword puzzles, short quizzes, and fun facts about the Bard;
