About the Netherlands

The Netherlands was a founding member of the UN, NATO and the predecessor of the European Union, and today it is active in a variety of multilateral and bilateral fora. The Netherlands is also the world's third largest donor of foreign and development aid on a per capita basis. The father of modern international law, Hugo de Groot, came from the Netherlands and thus it is no surprise that the Netherlands is home to many of the international community's most important judicial entities, making The Hague the international legal capital of the world.
As a modern, diverse and humanistic people, the Dutch pride themselves on their education, environmental, social and health care policies. These often innovative policies grow out of the consensus-based nature of Dutch society.
