The Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education (LIFE) is pleased to offer its insurance education module for high school and community college students called Next Generation: Insuring Your Future.
Next Generation
Planning one's future can be a very confusing and daunting experience, especially for young people. In the span of a few short years, most teenagers go from complete financial dependence on their parents to having to make nearly all financial decisions on their own. To help young people prepare for this transition, LIFE is offering the updated Next Generation: Insuring Your Future - Second Edition free of charge to all qualifying teachers.
Next Generation: Insuring Your Future - Second Edition is an entertaining, educational classroom module, aimed at helping high school and community college students understand the role of life and health insurance in financial planning. Through this program, LIFE hopes to assist educators in preparing their students for the "real world" financial decisions they will soon face.
Teachers ordering Next Generation will receive an easy-to-use teacher's kit consisting of the following materials: a 22-minute video, a 28-page educator's guide, student magazines, and a classroom poster. The video is designed to generate student interest by using language and style to which they can relate. The video draws on elements of current pop culture and features real-life stories that illustrate how life, health and disability income insurance have had a positive effect on the lives of other young adults. The educator's guide includes detailed background information on insurance concepts and the different types of insurance, reproducibles, a glossary of terms, a teacher survey and a list of organizations to contact for additional information. The kit includes thirty* (30) copies of a 12-page student magazine entitled "Risky Business." Using specially written articles and worksheets, this unit is designed to give young people additional information about how insurance works and how to apply that information to their own needs. (*You may order up to 120 additional copies for your school.)

What is LIFE?
LIFE, the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education, is a non-profit organization formed in 1994 in response to the growing need to educate the public about the benefits of insurance. With so many financial products available today, LIFE understands that it is hard to know where to turn for straightforward, unbiased information. LIFE provides consumers with easy-to-understand answers to often-complicated questions about life, health, and disability income insurance. LIFE's ultimate goal is to help individuals, families and businesses make better informed decisions about how insurance should fit into their financial plans.
Teacher Workshops
To promote insurance education, LIFE has teamed up with insurance education groups from different parts of the U.S. These alliance groups will organize teacher workshops designed to arm educators with the training needed to teach insurance more effectively.
Leading academics and industry representatives will head the workshop courses. Teachers selected to attend workshops will be awarded scholarships for the program and will receive three graduate credits upon completion. The Next Generation Program will be introduced to teachers as part of the curriculum at the summer workshops.
For information about teacher workshops, please contact:
- LIFE-line.org -- LIFE's Web site has everything from basic information about life, health and disability insurance, to interactive calculators that help consumers determine the value of their lives in dollars and cents. Another interactive feature is a quiz that tests consumers' knowledge about different types of insurance. Most importantly, life-line is an educational site that consumers can turn to for reliable information when they have questions about their insurance needs.
- realLIFEstories -- These are real-life stories that illustrate how life, health and disability income insurance helped everyday people get through very difficult financial times. By publicizing stories that describe how insurance made a big difference in real people's lives, LIFE hopes to provide consumers with a better understanding of the many benefits of insurance and of the important role of the professional agent. To obtain a free booklet describing these and other realLIFEstories, please call 800-268-7680.
- Community Education Kit -- Insurance Matters: A Multimedia Community Education Kit - A multimedia kit designed to help insurance professionals educate people in their communities about the important role insurance plays in their financial plans. The kit consists of three modules - life, disability income, and long-term care insurance - and is intended for use in group presentation settings such as civic group meetings, adult education classes, policyholder seminars, and workplace gatherings. Each module contains the tools needed to make effective group presentations - a Presenter's Guide that offers suggestions on how to secure speaking opportunities; a videocassette to help encourage the audience; talking points in outline form to allow flexibility; overheads in transparency and PowerPoint formats to enhance the presentation; handouts and worksheets.
- Public Education Advertising -- LIFE's advertising is intended to serve as a wake-up call for the growing number of people who lack adequate life insurance protection. The ads ask consumers to take a moment to consider the possibility that they may die sooner than expected, and to think about how loved ones would fare financially in their absence. This back-to-the-basics message is summed up in LIFE's signature tag line: "Life insurance isn't for the people who die. It's for the people who live." Like all of LIFE's communications, the ads not only convey the unique value of life insurance, but also stress the important role of insurance professionals.
