I teach Technology Education, specifically Graphic, Photography
and Video and Windsor High School. VPW provides a valuable
service to educators, and I appreciate the assistance. Whenever
I search the VPW list, I do not limit myself to my specific subject
areas. I always try to relate what we learn in our Tech Ed classes
to what is learned in other subject areas and how what we do
applies to the real world.
The video on conserving the rain forests is used in our discussion of the impact of technology on our world, as it reinforces the message of responsible use of our natural resources.
The CD-ROM on Nobel Prize winners helps put faces to the names of inventors. It helps me make connections to the rich history behind the technologies we use every day. I tell my students that, while I teach Communication Technology, I also teach technology in general. More importantly, I simply teach. I am responsible for reinforcing and supplementing the whole of the education.
My "tip" to teachers: Look beyond the boundaries of your classrooms and subject areas. The more you connect your topic to other areas of students’ education, the more they will connect their real lives to your teaching.
