“Each year I do an extensive unit about the Holocaust and the themes that
surround this topic: prejudice, stereotypes, individuality [and more].
This year I used the video, Face: A Portrait. Students studied their faces
in the mirror, then wrote an essay about what they believed their face
conveyed to those around them. They created a mask that they felt expressed
who they were and what they valued as a human. The students presented
their masks to the class and received feedback. What it taught is sometimes
what we think we put out into the world is not what others see. It was a great
lesson on individuality, valuing others, and not making judgments on outside
appearances alone.”
