A Journey Through Our Eyes - An Interactive CD-ROM About Eye Care and Eye Safety

Sponsor: American Optometric Association
Grades: 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade

Vision is a miraculous and intricate process – something most of us take for granted. Eye problems and concerns should not be thought of as being limited to older people. About 12% of American children under five have clinically significant vision problems. One in four children from five to nine years of age has vision problems, and it is estimated that over 150,000 school children suffer eye injuries each year. The more young people know about how their eyes work and what kind of regular care the eyes need, the more likely they will be to practice eye safety and preventive eye care throughout their lives.

The activities within the program have been designed for students ages nine through 13. They encourage independent research, critical thinking, reading, and written and verbal communication.

Everyone is Different - A music CD and activities booklet teaching understanding and acceptance

Sponsor: Forward Face
Grades: 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade

(This program is currently oversubscribed. Please check back later in the year.)

Everyone is Different is an exciting new educational/musical program about difference: being different, feeling different, and being around others who may seem different. The program consists of a music CD, a songbook complete with music and lyrics, and a teacher’s guide with suggested discussion questions and suggestions for classroom activities.

Each song presents a different aspect of intolerance: how it comes to be, why it happens, where it happens, and how it can be stopped. In actuality, everyone IS different and understanding and not being afraid of other's differences brings a richer experience of life for all students.

The music and lyrics are composed and written for Forward Face by the award winning playwright, composer, lyricist and author, Elizabeth Swados. The songs are performed by young professionals in the theater arts. The music is varied; jazz, rock and roll, ballads, rap and gospel.

Forward Face is a non-profit organization that supports children with facial differences and their families. Forward Face is dedicated to creating public awareness through educational programs dealing with difference.
